So what does it take to be a writer. First and foremost what you need is: practice, practice, and more
practice. You need to hone your writing skills. Crisp, sharp, and clear. The second is being able to come
up with ideas to write about. The two concepts go hand in hand. No one can sit down and whip out article,
story, or book without research, and no one can write successfully without practice.
If you can not think of an idea, the technique most writers use is called pre-writing. Pre-writing is a process
of writing down as many different dimensions of an idea you can think of. It can be a very scattered affair,
but writing down ideas without form, or function can relieve the writer from a more formal setting, and
develop points of interest. This technique can give you the ability to develop one idea that has many facets.
Each facet reflecting in many directions the one basic idea, as a cut diamond reflects light patterns. So how
do you develop that one idea? There a several techniques to use, but I will concentrate on free-writing.
The very first requirement is for you to find a quiet little spot where you will not be disturbed. Settle in relax.
What is your passion? What do you like or dislike? What do you want to see changed, grown, built or
destroyed? Still no idea? Then sit quietly and write down anything and everything that comes to mind, and
give yourself a time limit. Maybe five minutes. Do not worry about spelling, grammar or form. Just let your
words stream onto your paper. It may not make any sense at this point in time, as you sit and write this
way, certain topics will be repeated. Those topics that are repeated have to come from somewhere, and
must have some importance in your thoughts. When you have done this, say, 5 times, then put your writings
together and see what connects. Let's say your writings showed you using the words or ideas of “family”
and “dogs.” Now, you take these two main ideas and write down as many related words you can think of for
each main topic word. Here you can expand your soon to be polished idea, just from those two words.
“Family”: husband, parents, children, ancestors, marriage, son, and daughter. “Dog”, pets, family pet, types
of dogs, what types of dogs make good family pets, pet health, pet training, and pet products. Now try to
write one sentence that centers on your key words. You can repeat this process by free writing for another
five minutes using that one sentence. Repeating this process a number of times will develop a clearer
concept.
Of course you can find ideas within your own experiences. What did you do last weekend, how was the
weather, how was the weather different last year, or a hundred years ago. Remember, just be easy on
yourself and do not pick such a broad subject that it would take volumes to cover.
Another rule you should try is to be able to express your main idea in your first paragraph, and/or be able to
capture the interest of your reader within the first two paragraphs. If you can not, then you have lost them.
Worrying about selling, agents, publishers, and lucrative contracts will come later. Now is the time to
practice and grow. If you want to see your work in print, the websites such as scribd.com, go-articles.com,
and digg.com can be jumping off points in your climb to success. On these sites, you can post anything you
write, and other writers will read and critique your work. And it's free. And in most cases, your work will not
be rejected.
Another area you will need to learn is the what is going on in the market. What is selling, what is not. Do
your research before you spends days writing an article that will not be read. Go to a bookstore and find
what topics are in the top 10, join writer's forum and ask the experts, or take a class on writing through your
local school. There is much to learn, and it will take time, but for now, practice, practice, and more practice.
