Acadia NP,Maine
Established in 1919, Acadia was the first national park east of the
Mississippi River. It was also the first national park on a coast, and the first
to be donated to the federal government by private individuals who gave
land that they had previously owned as well as land specifically
purchased, in order to preserve it for the use of the public.
At 47,657 acres, Acadia is one of the smallest of the 57 US national parks,
yet with more than 2.6 million visitors a year, it ranks as the 9th most
popular. Another favorite stop while visiting Acadia is Bar Harbor, Maine
Have you ever thought of standing on a sandy beach, wrapped up in a
cozy sweater watching the fog slowly drift by? Well, if you have, or like the
ocean and beaches, you may love Acadia National Park. Acadia National
park protects 7 islands and is primarily located on Mount Desert Island,
Maine. [IMAGE OF MISTY COAST AT ACADIA]Mount Desert island and
another island in Acadia, Isle au Haut, were given their names by the
French explorer Samuel Champlain. However, Samuel Champlain was not
the first to live on Mount Desert Island. Native Americans lived there as
early as 6,000 years ago. The French and English fought over the area
for many years after Champlain's discovery. 155 years later, in 1759, the
English finally won the island, allowing peaceful settlement of the island.
Later on in the parks history, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and his family built
45 miles of carriage roads. These roads were built so John Rockefeller
could ride through the forests and mountains of Mount Desert Island on
his carriage. He and his crew took great pride in the carriage roads,
building roads that not only fit into the natural beauty of the landscape but
also provided beautiful views of the coastal area.
Weather
Since Acadia NP is in Maine and is off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean,
cooler temperatures, even in the summer, are often. Normal highs in the
summer range from 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Anytime out of those two
or three summer months it is a good idea to bring along several sweaters
and possibly a light coat. In the winter months, which is from November to
April, the average high is below freezing (about 30 degrees Fahrenheit).
No matter what season you visit Acadia, always be prepared for wet
weather.
